About the Fellowship

John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) 2026

The John Allwright Fellowship (JAF) is now accepting applications for the 2026 intake, providing fully funded opportunities for scientists and economists from ACIAR partner countries to pursue postgraduate research degrees at leading Australian universities. This fellowship aims to enhance research capabilities and promote international collaboration in agriculture, fisheries, and food security.

Fellowship Overview

  • Scholarship type: Full tuition fee cover
  • Stipend value: Fortnightly Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE)
  • Other supports:
    • Return air travel (economy class, most direct route)
    • Establishment allowance for accommodation, textbooks, and study materials
    • Introductory Academic Program (IAP) before formal studies
    • Pre-course English (PCE) training, if required
    • Supplementary academic support for research success
    • Fieldwork funding (economy airfare) for eligible research students
    • JAF Support Facility (JSF) – additional pastoral and networking support
    • Access to Australia Awards networking and alumni events
  • Health insurance: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the award holder
  • Study Level: Masters by Research / PhD
  • Study Course: Agriculture, fisheries, and food security-related fields
  • Citizen type: Citizens of ACIAR partner countries (excluding India and Myanmar)
  • Number of positions: Varies annually
  • Duration:
    • Up to 2 years for Masters by Research
    • Up to 4 years for PhD
  • Application deadline: 30 April 2025

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this fellowship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of an ACIAR partner country (excluding India and Myanmar)
  • Have actively participated in an ACIAR-supported research project within the last 24 months
  • Hold a relevant bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a field related to postgraduate research
  • Provide proof of English proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, PET) or be willing to take the test
  • Obtain employer endorsement confirming support for the study leave
  • Submit a strong research proposal addressing gender equity, social inclusion, climate change, and national development priorities
  • Have current employment on a permanent or long-term contract basis
  • Secure written approvals from the ACIAR Project Leaders, Primary Supervisor, and collaborating institutions

Selection Criteria 

The selection process is merit-based and considers:

  • Academic performance in previous studies
  • Research potential in the field of study
  • Relevance of the proposed research to national and global agricultural priorities
  • Professional experience and contributions to ACIAR projects
  • Endorsements and recommendations from project leaders and institutions
  • Research skills demonstrated through publications and fieldwork experience

How to Apply

Applications for the 2026 intake open on 1 February 2025 and close on 30 April 2025.

Application Steps:

  1. Register an account on OASIS (Application Portal)
  2. Select the ACIAR John Allwright Fellowships award program
  3. Complete the online application form
  4. Upload required documents, including:
    • Proof of citizenship (birth certificate or passport)
    • Certified academic transcripts and degree certificates
    • Research proposal addressing climate change, gender equity, and social inclusion
    • Employer endorsement letter (template available)
    • Referee reports from Project Leaders (templates available)
    • Primary Supervisor endorsement letter
    • Current CV and list of publications (if applicable)
    • English language proficiency report (IELTS/TOEFL/PET or university confirmation letter)
