The Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship provides financial support to outstanding domestic and international higher degree by research (HDR) candidates. This scholarship aims to assist HDR students in achieving academic excellence by offering support for tuition fees, living expenses, and research-related allowances.

The RTP Scholarship is awarded through a competitive selection process based on academic merit, research potential, and professional experience. This opportunity is open to those pursuing a Master’s by Research or Doctoral (PhD) degree at participating Australian universities.

 Scholarship overview

  • Scholarship type: Full tuition fee offset
  • Stipend value: Annual living allowance of A$35,482 (2025 rate, indexed annually).
    • Duration: Up to 3 years (Doctoral program) with a 6-month extension possible; 1.5 years (Master’s program) with a 6-month extension possible.
    • Includes limited paid sick leave, maternity, and parenting leave.
  • Relocation allowance: A combined total of A$2,000 to assist with moving expenses for eligible HDR candidates.
  • Study level: Masters by Research/PhD
  • Study course: Open to all study areas
  • Citizen type: Domestic and international students
  • Number of positions: Varies annually
  • Deadline: Round Timings (2025)
    • Domestic Rounds:
      • Round 1: Opens 17 February, closes 21 March (outcomes: 31 May).
      • Round 2: Opens 28 July, closes 12 September (outcomes: 1 December).
    • International Rounds:
      • Round 1: Opens 1 June, closes 18 July (outcomes: 14 November).

Eligibility Criteria 

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Have applied for and met the entry requirements for a higher degree by research program at a participating Australian university.
  2. Not receive an equivalent award or scholarship from the Commonwealth to offset HDR tuition fees.
  3. Be enrolled or have an offer for admission to a Master’s or PhD program.

The selection process for the RTP Scholarship is merit-based and considers the following factors:

  • Academic achievements (e.g., GPA, rankings).
  • Research experience and potential in the proposed field of study.
  • Alignment of the research proposal with the applicant's previous studies.
  • Relevant professional experience.
  • Recommendations from referees who can attest to the applicant's research capacity.
  • Demonstrated research skills (e.g., publications, presentations).

To apply for the RTP Scholarship, applicants must:

  1. Submit an application for an appropriate HDR program via the university's portal.
  2. Apply for the RTP Scholarship through the university's Scholarship Application Portal.
    • Provide responses directly in the portal’s question fields.
    • Upload the following attachments:
      • Two referee reports: Referees should comment on the applicant’s qualifications, skills, and research potential. One referee should address professional experience if applying via a professional pathway.
      • Response to Criteria 4 template: Completed by the Principal Supervisor.

Applicants must ensure all documents are submitted before the relevant round closing date.
