JCU Deans’ Scholarship

The JCU Deans’ Scholarship is part of James Cook University’s commitment to rewarding and supporting high-achieving school leavers. It offers $20,000 for up to four years of study ($5,000 per year) to help students excel in their academic journey.

This scholarship supports high-achieving undergraduate students commencing full-time study at JCU in Study Period One, 2025. It is automatically assessed for eligible Year 12 school leavers, eliminating the need for a separate application process.

This opportunity is governed by James Cook University’s Coursework Scholarships, Bursaries, and Grants Policy.

Scholarship Overview

  • Scholarship Type: Partial financial support

  • Stipend Value: $20,000 total, disbursed as $5,000 annually over four years

  • Payment Schedule: Four equal instalments of $1,250 after census dates and results release each semester

  • Exclusive Benefits:

    • Mentoring and guidance in the first year
    • Group development and engagement opportunities
  • Duration: Maximum of four years

  • Study Level: Undergraduate (Bachelor’s degree)

  • Eligible Study Areas: All undergraduate degrees except Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Science

Eligibility Criteria 

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible:

  1. Year 12 Completion: Complete Year 12 in 2024 and enroll at JCU in 2025.
  2. New Student: Be a first-time JCU enrollee.
  3. Full-Time Enrollment: Enroll in a full-time undergraduate degree in Study Period One, 2025.
    • Excluded programs: Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery; Bachelor of Veterinary Science; Bachelor of Dental Surgery.
  4. Academic Achievement:
    • Achieve an ATAR between 95.00 and 97 or equivalent International Baccalaureate (IB) score.
    • Adjusted ATARs or bonus rank points are not considered.
    • ATAR of 97+ qualifies for the JCU Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship.
  5. Citizenship: Be an Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder, Australian Permanent Resident, or New Zealand Citizen.
  6. Exclusions: Cannot be a recipient of any other JCU-funded scholarship.

Selection Criteria

The JCU Deans’ Scholarship is automatically assessed for Year 12 applicants meeting the criteria. Notifications are provided during the offer process, with no additional application required.

Key Selection Factors:

  • High academic performance (ATAR/IB score).
  • Enrollment in an eligible full-time undergraduate course at JCU.

Ongoing Eligibility

To retain the scholarship, recipients must:

  • Academic Standards:
    • Maintain a GPA of 5.0+ in the first year.
    • Maintain a GPA of 5.5+ in subsequent years.
  • Full-Time Enrollment: Continue full-time enrollment in an eligible course for the scholarship duration.
  • Special Consideration:
    • Students who become ineligible due to a GPA between 4.75–5.25 may submit a statement of reason with supporting evidence for consideration.

  1. Apply for your preferred undergraduate course at JCU through QTAC.
  2. JCU will assess your eligibility automatically.
  3. Successful candidates will be notified during the offer rounds beginning after ATAR results are released in December 2024.
