The Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP) provides funding to Australian universities to support the research training of both domestic and international Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates. Griffith University administers RTP Scholarships to assist with candidates’ general living costs while they undertake research. This competitive program is designed to attract outstanding applicants worldwide to pursue a Master’s or PhD at Griffith University.

Scholarship  Overview 

  • Scholarship Type: Living stipend
  • Stipend Value: $34,752 per annum (2025 full-time rate, indexed annually)
  • Other Benefits:
    • Generous paid leave (recreational, sick, parental, cultural, and partner leave)
    • Remote study options for domestic candidates
    • Flexibility to balance employment with study
  • Study Level: Masters/PhD by Research
  • Study Course: Open to all disciplines
  • Citizen Type: Domestic and international students
  • Number of Positions: Multiple awards are granted annually
  • Duration: Up to 2 years for a Masters by Research and up to 4 years for a PhD
  • Deadline: Applications are reviewed continuously, but specific intake deadlines are as follows:
    • Intake 1: 24 February 2025
    • Intake 2: 28 April 2025
    • Intake 3: 7 July 2025
    • Intake 4: 13 October 2025

Eligibility Criteria 

To qualify for the RTP Stipend, applicants must:

  • Be commencing or enrolled in an HDR program at Griffith University.
  • Not be receiving income from another source greater than 75% of the RTP stipend rate for living costs.
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree (AQF 8) with First-Class Honours or an equivalent qualification as determined by Griffith University.
  • Not have completed a degree at the same or higher level as the HDR program they are applying for.
  • Not have held a Commonwealth Government Australia Award within the last two years unless specifically approved.

Selection Criteria 

Selection for this scholarship is based on:

  1. Academic Excellence

    • Results from prior qualifications, particularly those with substantial research components.
    • The international standing of the institution where prior qualifications were earned.
  2. Research Background

    • Quality of research outputs and the applicant's contribution to them.
    • Evidence of sustained research experience and alignment with the proposed research.
  3. Program Fit

    • Compatibility between the applicant, their research proposal, the research environment, and supervision team.
    • Relevance of the proposed research to university research priorities.

How to Apply

  1. New Applicants:

    • Submit an online application for admission to a research program, which includes a section for scholarship application.
  2. Current Research Candidates:

    • Follow the specific process for submitting a scholarship application for current students.

Applications are processed within the Griffith Graduate Research School (GGRS), reviewed by academic departments, and ranked based on merit.
