The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sydney is offering a Postgraduate Research Scholarship 2025 to support a PhD student specializing in the development of embrittlement-tolerant alloys for safe hydrogen transmission and storage. This prestigious scholarship is backed by the University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) as part of a significant Australian Research Council Linkage Project.

The opportunity is open to both domestic and international students with a strong research background in engineering, particularly materials or mechanical engineering, or physics. The project aims to develop innovative steels capable of safely transporting hydrogen, a critical element in achieving Australia’s carbon-free economy goals. Stipend value: Up to $40,109 per annum (indexed annually)
Duration: Up to 3.5 years

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • Hold an unconditional offer for a full-time PhD in engineering or a related field at the University of Sydney
  • Possess a first-class honours degree or a master’s degree in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or physics
  • Note that applications can be submitted without an unconditional offer; however, no scholarship will be awarded until admission is confirmed

Selection Criteria

The selection process is merit-based and considers factors such as:

  • Academic achievements and grades in previous studies
  • Research potential and relevance to the proposed field
  • Relevant professional experience
  • Strong recommendations from previous referees
  • Demonstrated research capabilities through publications and previous projects
