Australia Awards Fellowships 2025

Australia Awards Fellowships are sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to build networks of influence and leadership across priority areas in developing regions. The program strengthens partnerships between Australian organizations and partner organizations in the region, targeting senior and mid-career officials and professionals. These fellowships aim to enhance leadership and institutional capacity in partner countries by providing short-term opportunities for study, research, and professional development in Australia.

Fellowship Award Benefits and Value

Award Type:

  • Short-term, non-academic professional development opportunities.

Funding Support:
Australian organizations can request up to AUD $34,500 per Fellow for a maximum of 15 Fellows. The funding covers:

  • Return air travel and in-Australia travel.
  • Training costs.
  • Accommodation and living expenses.
  • Medical insurance (for Fellowship holder only).
  • Special assistance for Fellows with disabilities.
  • Program overhead fees.

Study Level: Non-academic professional development
Priority Areas:

  1. Climate change, adaptation, resilience, and green energy transition (including critical mineral mining).
  2. Gender equality, disability equity, and social inclusion.
  3. Health.
  4. Digital economy, cyber resilience, and media engagement.
  5. Maritime and the blue economy.
  6. Infrastructure and connectivity.

Citizen Type: International participants from eligible countries (see Participating Countries below).
Number of Fellowships: Up to 15 Fellows per organization.
Duration: Short-term, varies based on the program's structure.
Application Deadline: 13 October 2024 (11:59 pm AEST).

Eligibility 

To be eligible, Fellows must:

  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of the Fellowship's commencement.
  • Be citizens of eligible countries (see below).
  • Not be permanent residents or applicants for permanent residency in Australia.
  • Not be current military personnel.
  • Satisfy the visa requirements for a DFAT-sponsored student visa (subclass 500).
  • Be available to participate in the Fellowship without family members (DFAT only supports individual Fellows).
  • Travel with a carer if they have a disability requiring assistance.

Participating Countries:
Africa – Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Selection 

The selection process is competitive and merit-based, with a focus on:

  • Leadership potential to contribute to development outcomes in priority areas.
  • The relevance of the Fellowship program to the applicant's role and field of expertise.
  • Professional achievements and prior experience.
  • The alignment of the applicant's career goals with the Fellowship's focus areas.
