What is GTE? How to meet this essential Student Visa Requirement

What is GTE? [Genuine Temporary Entrant]

The very first thing you should know is that the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) is a like statement or a letter, and it's one of the most essential criteria in assessing your Australian study visa application. It's one of the main reasons usually why a student visa is not granted. And the main reason behind this is if the student could not provide sufficient evidence for entering Australia genuinely.

So What exactly is GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant )? Also known as GTE-statement, GTE is an essential requirement that assesses the student's genuineness to enter Australia temporarily and only for the purpose of studies, with no other incentives to remain upon completion of studies. It is one of the most vital assessment criteria that you must pass as an international student in order to get your visa granted or approved. However, the good news is, this is not as complicated as it is. It is an easy task, just a letter. We will try to make it easy for you in this post.

Before writing your GTE, there are many things you must take into consideration:

  • Firstly, the statement you are about to write is to convince the visa officers that you have no other reason for coming to Australia apart from the sole purpose of obtaining a quality education. So how do you prove this? ask yourself this question.
  • Another factor to consider here also is that you are writing to prove to the visa officers that, the kind of education you seek to acquire can only be found in Australia, not in your home country, nor the USA, or Canada, Germany etc So why Australia and not these other top developed countries?
  • You must also consider that, you are writing to prove that, you will be going back home at the end of your studies in Australia. How do you prove this also? ask yourself.
If you can provide answers to all the above tasks, then you can also prove your genuineness in selecting Australia as your new academic home. And the best answer to these questions is the presentation of sufficient EVIDENCE!! While examining the criteria you are required to meet, the most convincing thing the visa officers want to see is sufficient evidence. Proofs of all that you claim you are!!Your backups!!

In combination with the above-mentioned points, before you finally start that letter, you must also examine the particular assessment criteria the Australian Department of home-affairs will consider in evaluating your GTE. Your statement or letter must be written in a way that addresses these GTE requirements. Below are the requirements the Australian Department of home-affairs is using to determine if you meet the GTE requirement :

1. The circumstances in your home country (or country of residence)

These circumstances could be considered either from your home country or where ever you are currently residing. What do they mean by circumstances here actually? they are considering factors like, are they similar courses in your home country that you could have taken instead of coming to Australia? if yes, then why didn't you take it and chose Australia rather. While writing your letter, these are the kind of things you must consider, and provide answers for them and sufficient evidence. Another example of circumstances they will equally be looking at is the political situation of your country, your current economic situation that is, those things that are pushing you away from your country and therefore might make you not intend to stay temporarily in Australia. So while writing your letter, to meet this requirement make sure to address issues like that.

2. The Potential situation for you in Australia.

This particular requirement is used to assess how your life will be once you enter Australia. Do you exactly know what you are coming to study? what about the living condition and the cost? how will all this affect your stay in Australia? Is there any financial arrangement? Your potential situation could also be looking at your ties with Australia, for example, if you have strong family ties there, something that might make you don't want to live temporally in Australia. One way to meet this requirement is to be able to prepare sufficient financial evidence especially if you are a self-sponsored student. Talk about your financial status in the statement and back it up with evidence. Examples of evidence could be a letter of employment, payslips or financial certificates etc.. from your sponsor or you.

3. The Value of your chosen course to your future

This particular requirement is very clear. They are using it to assess how valuable your course is to your future, your career etc. They also look at other factors like: does the course match your current academic background or is it consistent with your current education level? In any case, In this situation it could be very helpful if you can try to explain how beneficial this course is to your life, that is career-wise and try to relate it to your previous academic background or employment. Talk about your dream job, and your dream career.

4. Your immigration history

This particular requirement is being used to assess your previous visa history either with Australia, or other countries you have visited before. This is what they are actually looking for: if you had visa refusals before to Australia or any other country? criminal records in any other country, no compliance with any visa issue before like taking short or incomplete courses while living in Australia before? If you are in any of these situations it could be very helpful to seek advice from an immigration agent while proceeding with your application.

- Notice that If you are under 18, and applying for a student visa to study in Australia, the immigration officer might want to get legal approval or concern from your parents, legal guardian or spouse before proceeding with your application.
-Immigration might also take into consideration other matters in assessing your GTE. This could be general issues about citizens of your country's visa history, and your country's refugee status among others.

Documentation and evidence presentation

Below are some of the things that the department of home affairs will want to see you answer in your statement or letter. You will have to address why the below issues and provide evidence for them. Always remember, you can only prove your genuineness with evidence. You must be able to back up anything you claim:

👉1.Your previous academic qualifications

While writing your Genuine Temporary Entrant Statement, you must talk and show proof of your previous academic background and try to relate it to your current chosen course in Australia. To back this up, you will provide as evidence your transcripts and certificates which you will upload later at the end of your application as supporting documents.

👉2. Any Gap in the previous study?

if yes, then mention it while writing your statement, and try to justify with evidence. For example: did you do some internships or work after you graduated from your previous study? Then show documentation as supporting documents for it. For Example internship letters, employment letters etc...

👉3. Your Current Employment

Do you have any work experience? if yes, then talk about it in your GTE statement and show evidence for it. The year and date of the employment, company name etc... Examples of evidence to provide here could be employment letters etc...

👉4. Your Ties to the home country or country of residence

This is important evidence to consider. To meet the GTE requirement, the department of home affairs wants to see any evidence or incentive that will make you don't want to stay in Australia after your studies. For example, maybe you own a business or have a job offer that you will want to go back home for it. To help with this, show the supporting documents example Business certificates etc...

👉5. Your economic situation in your home country or country of residence

If you are a self-sponsored student then this is the time to talk about your financial capacities.
How financially stable are you to undertake your studies in Australia? Who is your sponsor, and how much are you worth? address all these questions in your GTE statement and show the supporting documents. For example employment certificates of your sponsor, payslips, bank statements etc. But on the other hand, if you are a scholarship student, then you will just have to mention your scholarships, the stipends and allowances, and do not forget to upload the scholarship document as supporting evidence.

👉6. Future Career goals and plans

Talk about your career, what you intend to do or become after you complete your studies in Australia, where you intend to work etc. You should be able to relate how what you will study in Australia will help you back home tomorrow.

The GTE requirement question is like step 7 in the online application form. The space in the online section can not exceed more than 2000 words, so just write something brief like what you see below, in the screenshot I have provided (the screenshot is what the online GTE section looks like). Later you will upload a lengthy statement or letter in the supporting document section where you must have detailed all that we have mentioned so far above.

Dear visa Officer,
I, Mr.…. declare that I intend to genuinely stay
in Australia temporarily and have no incentives to obtain this
student visa to remain after completing my course...
